This is sad 😭 RIP Alex
The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the heartbreaking death of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo at the age of 40. According to reports, the talented actor passed away Monday night at Evercare Hospital, Lekki, Lagos, after reportedly battling liver cancer. His death was confirmed by former BBNaija star and Actors Guild of Nigeria spokesperson, Boma Akpore, who revealed that his remains have been moved to Ebony Vaults, Ikoyi. For many fans and colleagues, the news still feels unreal. Alexx Ekubo was more than just a handsome face on screen he was a charismatic actor, a loyal friend, and a personality whose presence brought warmth, humour and energy to Nollywood. From romantic blockbusters to comedy and drama, he built a reputation as one of the industry’s most recognisable stars over the past decade. Veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen, who gave him his first movie role, recalled how Ekubo used to visit movie locations as a young man in Surulere before eventually earning his breakthrough in Nollywood. The emotional tribute painted the picture of a determined dreamer who worked his way into the hearts of millions. The outpouring of tributes from celebrities and colleagues has been overwhelming. Funke Akindele mourned the loss of someone who fondly called her “Ore mi,” while Omoni Oboli described him as her “bestie” and admitted she was struggling to come to terms with the loss. Richard Mofe-Damijo, Kate Henshaw, Peter Okoye, Mo Abudu, Yvonne Jegede, Ruth Kadiri, Kunle Remi and many others also shared emotional messages celebrating his life, kindness and impact. Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and hailing from Arochukwu in Abia State, Alexx Ekubo left behind a legacy that extended beyond acting. In 2020, the United Nations recognised him as one of the “Most Influential People of African Descent under 40” for his contributions to entertainment and social development. His sudden silence from social media and public appearances since late 2024 had sparked concerns among close associates, but many say he continued reassuring friends that he was fine. Today, Nollywood mourns not just an actor, but a rare soul whose smile, talent and humanity touched lives across Africa and beyond. Rest well, Alexx Ekubo. Your light will not be forgotten.
