A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has said he was misled when he previously defended former Anambra State Governor @peter-gregory-obi against allegations that his administration left debts and other financial obligations behind. Okonkwo, who served as a spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, said recent disclosures by the Anambra State Government had prompted him to reconsider some of the claims he made in defence of the former governor’s financial record. Speaking on a television programme, Okonkwo said he could no longer maintain his earlier position that Obi left office without debts, unpaid salaries, pensions or gratuities, citing claims by the Anambra State Government that the former administration obtained loans and left certain salary arrears. He stated that he was willing to change his views when presented with new information, noting that he would not continue to defend a position if fresh facts suggested otherwise. The comments come amid an ongoing dispute between Peter Obi and the Anambra State Government over the state’s debt profile and financial obligations during his tenure as governor. While the state government maintains that debts and arrears were inherited from the Obi administration, the former governor has disputed those claims, insisting that he left office without outstanding debts and other liabilities. Okonkwo said his approach to assessing Obi’s record ahead of the 2027 election would differ from his role during the 2023 campaign, stressing that he would now examine issues more critically.
